This load is the direct result of customer demand for deep penetration using the expanding Barnes X-style bullet in a 380 Auto +P configuration.
Below are real-world velocities recorded from stock, over-the-counter pistols. We avoid using extended laboratory test barrels, as they produce artificially high velocity readings that do not reflect real-world performance.
- 1,231 fps — Browning Double Action, 3.75-inch barrel
- 1,235 fps — Walther PPK, 3.5-inch barrel (faster than longer barrel above, not a typo)
- 1,130 fps — Kel Tec PA3T, 2.75-inch barrel
- 1,136 fps — Kahr P380, 2.53-inch barrel
The all-copper, long-for-weight Barnes bullet is so lengthy that when seated to an overall length (OAL) of .940 to .950 inch, the bullet base causes a slight bulge in the case. This bulge does not interfere with feeding or chambering, but we mention it here to preempt questions.
In fact, the bulge adds beneficial resistance to the bullet base, preventing it from being pushed deeper into the case during feeding. Attempting to eliminate the bulge by increasing the cartridge OAL would result in cartridges too long for some magazines.
Feeding performance was 100% reliable in all of our over-the-counter test firearms.
