.45 ACP +P ammunition is externally and dimensionally identical to standard .45 ACP and can be safely fired in any .45 ACP firearm that is in normal operating condition. However, due to the increased pressure and power of +P loads, slide velocity will be higher. If you plan to shoot more than a box or two of +P ammo, consider the following upgrades:
- Install a Wolff recoil spring with 4–6 lbs more tension than factory stock
- Optionally add a shock buffer (less necessary if using a stronger spring)
Below are actual velocities recorded from a personal Colt Gold Cup 1911 with a 5-inch barrel:
- 1,180 fps – 45185 (185gr JHP)
- 1,078 fps – 45200 (200gr JHP)
- 979 fps – 45230 (230gr JHP)
- 981 fps – 45230FMJ (230gr FMJ Flat Nose)
- 960 fps – 45255 (255gr Hard Cast Flat Nose)
Buffalo Bore uses real-world firearms to generate velocity data, not laboratory test barrels. This ensures our published figures reflect actual performance in everyday firearms.
All .45 ACP +P loads utilize flash-suppressed powder to prevent shooter blindness in low-light conditions—an important tactical advantage when threats are most active.
Bullet application overview:
- JHP loads: Designed for personal defense against humans
- Non-expanding loads: Engineered to penetrate large shoulder bones or skulls of black bears
- Also effective for shooting through barriers such as car doors or stick-frame walls
