As always, Buffalo Bore tests and publishes velocities using real-world, over-the-counter firearms. This ensures customers know how the ammunition performs in practical scenarios—not in laboratory conditions. We believe that publishing velocities from extra-long test barrels produces misleadingly high numbers that do not reflect real-world performance.
Test Velocities – Heavy .45 Colt +P Load:
- 1,533 fps – Freedom Arms Model 97, 5.25-inch barrel
- 1,505 fps – Ruger pre-2005 Large Frame Vaquero, 5.5-inch barrel
- 1,855 fps – Marlin Model 1894 Cowboy, 20-inch barrel
This long-for-weight Barnes X-style bullet penetrates deeply for its weight, making it suitable for big game hunting—from whitetail deer to elk.
The crimp groove placement by Barnes allows for a short overall cartridge length (OAL) of 1.572 inches. This enables compatibility with short-cylinder revolvers like the Freedom Arms Model 97. However, due to the power of this load, it should be used only in the following firearms:
- All large-frame Rugers (Blackhawk, Redhawk variants chambered in .454 Casull or .45 Colt, pre-2005 Vaqueros)
- Colt Anaconda
- All Freedom Arms revolvers chambered in .454 Casull or .45 Colt
- Dan Wesson revolvers
- Winchester and Marlin Model 1894 lever actions
- All falling block actions made of modern steel
- TC Encore
- All Henry lever actions
- Handi Rifle
- All modern Model 1892 lever guns
Important Note: These heavy .45 Colt +P loads are not intended for the New Model Vaquero (small frame). Please consult the technical article titled “Ruger Revolvers and .45 Colt +P Ammunition” for more details.
For additional information on compatibility with Model 1892 variants and copies, refer to the technical article on “1892s and Their Variants.”
Note: This ammunition is intended for use only in firearms that are specifically rated for +P pressure. Do not use in guns not designated for +P loads, as doing so may result in damage or injury.
