In response to customer demand, Buffalo Bore has introduced two new 35 Whelen loads tailored for a range of big game hunting scenarios.
Item 42A is loaded with a Sierra 225-grain SPTZ-BT bullet, achieving 2,705 fps from a Remington 700 with a 24-inch barrel. At typical impact velocities, this bullet expands reliably while maintaining structural integrity—making it ideal for large game such as bull elk. We recommend this load for animals ranging from whitetail deer to Yukon moose and bison. For tougher, angled shots on large game—where bullet performance is critical—we suggest Item 42B, featuring a 225-grain Barnes TSX bullet at 2,654 fps from a similar rifle. Although slightly slower than the Sierra load, the TSX’s all-copper construction and longer profile reduce case capacity, accounting for the velocity difference.
If maximum penetration is your priority, the 225-grain TSX is unmatched among expanding bullets in this caliber. It penetrates deeper than even a typical 250-grain premium partition bullet, while offering the benefits of higher velocity, flatter trajectory, and reduced recoil. This load is especially suited for challenging quartering or straight-away shots on the largest North American big game.
