Buffalo Bore is releasing two new 404 Jeffery loads using modern powders and bullets that elevate the cartridge’s effectiveness to match the ballistics of the 416 Remington and original 416 Rigby—now enhanced with far more terminally effective projectiles.
We are featuring two bullet types: one soft and one solid.
- 400 gr. CEB (Cutting Edge Bullet) Flat Nose Solid:
Made entirely of brass, this bullet maintains low pressures while achieving high velocities. On African game, the large flat nose creates a wound channel at least double the bullet’s diameter (approximately .84 caliber) and penetrates several feet in a straight line. It is suitable for both brain and body shots on elephants, making it more than adequate for smaller game. - 375 gr. CEB Raptor:
Also brass, this bullet is engineered to shed its mushrooming petals after 1–2 inches of penetration. These petals continue to penetrate another 12–20 inches, creating four additional wound paths, while the solid shank drives forward like a traditional solid. Ideal for Cape Buffalo, soft-skinned lion, plains game, and North American moose, elk, or large bear.
The original 404 Jeffery, released in 1905, featured a 400 gr. bullet at 2,150 fps—a conservative velocity considering the robust 1898 Mauser actions available at the time. Despite its limitations and outdated bullet designs, it still proved effective on dangerous game.
Our modern loads push the 400 gr. solid to 2,350–2,400 fps and the 375 gr. Raptor to 2,400–2,450 fps, depending on barrel specifics. These velocities match the performance of the 416 Remington and original 416 Rigby. Thanks to advanced bullet designs and optimized propellants, these loads maintain low pressures while delivering high velocity and exceptional reliability.
