Mono-metal bullets offer several advantages—and a few disadvantages—compared to typical non-expanding hard cast bullets. These pros and cons may vary in importance depending on your intended use.
Advantages
- Cleaner burning and firing than hard cast bullets
- Resist nose deformation when striking large bones at close range and high velocity
- Maintain better straight-line penetration due to consistent nose profile
- Penetrate far deeper than lead-based bullets of similar weight
Disadvantages
- Higher cost due to material and manufacturing complexity
- Reduced case capacity because mono-metal bullets are longer for their weight
For example, the 380 gr. mono-metal bullet used in our DG .45-70 load is as long as a 500+ gr. hard cast bullet. This length reduces available space for propellant in the .45-70 casing, requiring careful selection of powders that deliver high velocity without exceeding 43,000 PSI.
Case capacity challenges are even greater in smaller cartridges like the .44 Magnum. Lead-based bullets, being heavier for their length, allow more room for powder and are easier to load to high velocities.
Despite these challenges, flat-nosed, lightweight mono-metal bullets consistently outperform lead-based bullets in straight-line penetration—often dramatically.
Performance Notes
This 380 gr. mono-metal .45-70 load creates a massive wound channel due to its large meplat and penetrates deeply in flesh and bone. It is not ideal for deer hunting, as it could pass through multiple animals if lined up. For thin-bodied game like deer, an expanding bullet with shallower penetration and a larger mushroomed nose is more appropriate.
Real-World Velocities
- 2,135 fps – Browning Miroku 1885, 28-inch barrel
- 2,068 fps – Winchester Miroku 1886, 22-inch barrel
- 2,047 fps – Marlin 1895, 20-inch barrel
- 2,021 fps – Marlin 1895, 18.5-inch barrel
These velocities were recorded using real-world firearms, not laboratory test barrels, ensuring accurate field performance data.
This load is specifically designed for large and dangerous game animals. It is suitable for taking down:
- Bison
- Cape Buffalo
- Elephant
You can shoot a bull elk lengthwise with this load and expect full penetration—the bullet is likely to exit cleanly due to its deep straight-line penetration capabilities.
