When they were first introduced in the early 1850s, multi-shot percussion revolvers forever changed handgun designs and made a huge impact on the battlefields of the Mexican-American War and the American Civil War. However, as metallic cartridges became more and more popular, the shortcomings of the percussion cap revolvers became more and more noticeable. They were slow to reload, and were prone to misfire if loaded improperly. To keep up with the constantly evolving design of handguns, older percussion cap revolvers were converted to fire the new metallic cartridges. These conversion revolvers paved the way for more modern and recognizable designs, including the world famous Single Action Army.
